Axeon Specialty Products LLC (Axeon SP) has a goal for each of its employees to donate 24 hours per year to community outreach. In 2013, Axeon SP employees donated more than 5,000 hours total for 30 outreach projects. We engage our employees in the areas of their interest, touching our local schools, seniors and veterans, as well as wider community and global needs, Axeon SP Public Affairs Director Claire Riggs explained.
To ensure that their employees community outreach activities are consistent with the needs of their community, the company has its own form of outreach. We meet with key community leaders through our Community Advisory Panel to ensure we keep a pulse on the needs of the community, Riggs said. For the past 24 years, Axeon SP’s Paulsboro Refinery employees have hosted a fundraising event for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Axeon SP, and many of its business partners, has been a fundraising partner with MDA since 1990 and has helped raise more than $1.5 million to combat Muscular Dystrophy. The annual event raises funds for services, such as support group sessions, equipment repairs, MDA summer camp experiences, and research to find a cure.
Education is a community involvement priority for Axeon SP. Employees mentored at-risk youth at the local high school, and they helped raise $50,000 in scholarship money through the Gloucester County College Foundation’s gala event. Gloucester County College’s Women in Tech Fair, which brings eighth and ninth grade girls to the campus for a day-long science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) program, is planned in part by Axeon SP employees. In addition, Axeon SP participated in a consortium with Gloucester County College, county Office of Economic Development, and three neighboring companies, to address the future hiring needs in the local petrochemical industry; this resulted in the development of a fast-track training program leading to a Certificate in Process Technology.
Axeon SP employees participated in the Annual United Way of Gloucester County Employee Campaign kick-off event, which brings together community, non-profit, and corporate employees for fun, competitive activities that carry over into fundraising for the United Way campaign. Axeon SP offers a matching gift of $.50 for every dollar raised to encourage employee participation.
Axeon SP’s Paulsboro Refinery hosted an open house as part of Manufacture NJ Week, a partnership with the NJ Department of Labor & Workforce Development and the NJ Institute of Technology.
